After a 23-year ordeal, which included deportation, threats, and incarceration, Ricky Martin Floyd Walters aka hip hop legend Slick Rick, has become a US citizen! “I am so proud of this moment… and so honored to finally become an American citizen,” Rick said in a statement. “This has been a long time coming for me, and I am relieved to finally put this long chapter behind me.”
The “Hey Young World” penner had a major clash with the law in 1990 when he was charged in New York for the shooting of his cousin, which Rick said was in self-defense. He was found guilty of attempted second-degree murder and sent to jail. INS agents wanted Slick Rick booted out of the country, so part of his jail time included being detained at an immigration detention center! There were other attempts to deport him, but in 2008, former governor David A. Paterson pardoned Walters for all his crimes on grounds of good behavior while locked up and service to the community after his release.
Fans are elated at the news of his acceptance as a citizen because “The Ruler” gave us some of the most memorable party raps of the 80s
Even though Rick got his national claim to fame with Doug E. Fresh and The Get Fresh Crew, he met rapper Dana Dane while attending the LaGuardia High School of Music & Art in Manhattan. It was then that he adopted the rap name Slick Rick. The duo sported Kangol, a popular brand of English hats, and dubbed themselves the Kangol Crew.
“I am overjoyed that my great friend can look to the future without the burden of his citizenship weighing on him,” said the “Nightmares” lyricist. “Finally Victory!”
