Boyfriend Charged with Murder in Stabbing Death of Morgan Freeman’s Granddaughter

August 17, 2015

Morgan Freeman’s step-granddaughter may have beenΒ stabbed to death on Sunday during an exorcism, witnesses told multiple news outlets.

Lamar Davenport, of New York City, has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of 33-year-old E’Dena Hines, the granddaughter of Freeman’s first wife, theΒ Associated Press reports.

Hines was found lying in the street outside her New York City home at about 3 a.m. on Sunday. She had suffered multiple stab wounds to her torso, the New York Police Department confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE.

A 30-year-old man, later identified as Davenport, was taken into custody at the scene. EMS rushed Hines to Harlem Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police say Davenport and Hines were in a relationship. A witness told CBS News that he heard Hines and Davenport arguing from his apartment window about an hour before her body was found. The witness said it seemed as if Davenport was trying to perform an exorcism, yelling things like “Devil, be gone.”

Witnesses similarly told Newsday that Davenport was trying to “exorcise” Hines’ “demons.”

It is unclear whether Davenport has an attorney.
