Grammy-winning R&B singer and reality show star CeeLo Green will play Ziggy’s by the Sea in downtown Wilmington March 18, the music venue announced Tuesday.
Tickets go on sale 10 a.m. Monday.
Green, known for a distinctive voice that can range from an edgy croon to a comic whine to a soaring falsetto, got his start in the 1990s with Atlanta hip-hop outfit Goodie Mob. He later went solo and vaulted to stardom as part of the duo Gnarls Barkley with producer Danger Mouse. The song “Crazy” from the 2006 album “St. Elsewhere,” which Green sung and wrote the words to, was a massive hit and nearly inescapable during the summer of ’06.
After another Gnarls Barkley album, 2008’s “The Odd Couple,” Green resumed his solo career in 2010 with “The Lady Killer,” which yielded a big, profanely titled hit dubbed “Forget You” for radio consumption.
Green’s profile rose even higher when he became a judge on NBC talent competition “The Voice.” But his reputation took a hit in 2014 after pleading no contest to a felony charge of giving a woman Ecstasy and later tweeting messages about the case that many viewed as offensive.
Green’s most recent album, “Heart Blanche,” was released in November and addresses the scandal. His Wilmington show is part of Green’s “Love Train” tour in support of the new record.
