Dekalb County officially declares March 10,2015 “Hosea Williams Day” in honor of his efforts as a Civil Rights Leader.
March 11, 2015-Decatur, GA- On Tuesday March 10, 2015 CEO of Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless, Elisabeth Omilami accepted a proclamation from Interim Chief Executive Officer, Lee May and the Board of Commissioners for Dekalb County on behalf of her father, Civil Rights Leader, philanthropist, minister and politician Hosea L. Williams. The proclamation honored Reverend Williams for his efforts as an African American trailblazer during the Civil Rights Movement and officially declared March 10, 2015, as “Hosea Williams Day.” Many notables and media outlets were in attendance to witness this momentous occasion.
During the proclamation attendees viewed a documentary from the historical 2015 50th anniversary Selma march which celebrated how Hosea Williams led the march on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in 1965 where people were sprayed and brutally beaten as they marched for freedom. This event, which led to the signing of the Voting Rights Act that allowed African Americans to vote without restriction or fear or persecution, is now known as Bloody Sunday. Even after this life changing march Williams continued his role as a civil rights leader and philanthropist by founding Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless along with his wife Juanita. Since 1971 Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless has provided a number of services such as rent assistance, medical support, transportation, nutritional services and more to Atlanta families as well as internationally. It is the goal of the organization to inspire citizens nationwide to lend a hand to those in their communities. The Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless organization, now run by Elisabeth Omilami and Afemo Omilami, will remain dedicated to helping individuals in need. Hosea Williams’ Legacy will forever live on through this organization as he dedicated his life to the service of others.
The upcoming annual Easter event held by Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless will take place on Monday April 6, 2015. The event will be held 10 a.m until 3 p.m at the Georgia International Convention Center. In addition to meals, clothing, beauty, and barbering, the organization will offer medical services to those in need.
