G.L.O.W., or Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington, is the first single gender public charter school in North Carolina, located at 606 South College Road.
On Monday, August 29, G.L.O.W. will open its doors to 100 sixth grade girls, most coming from disadvantaged neighborhoods.
“I see this as the starting line, not the finish line,” stated G.L.O.W. president, Todd Godbey. “When we’re really going to start celebrating is when those first young ladies walk across the stage in 2023 and graduate from high school.”
Godbey said the sisterhood that G.L.O.W. provides is a proven success and is part of a national network of schools, or the Young Women’s Leadership Network, which includes 18 schools nationwide.
All schools are 6th thru 12th grade schools dedicated to leveling the playing field for disadvantaged girls.
“At the end of the day the research shows very clearly, when not distracted by boys in the classroom at the very core and early on, like school more, they choose harder courses, they make better grades and they’re not worried about their appearance so much as being smart,” Godbey said.
Unlike many public charter schools, Godbey said GLOW will provide transportation and meals for all students.
The plan is that every year, 100 new girls will be added to the roster, which means pretty soon G.L.O.W. will need to grow and in three to four years, he hopes to move into a new 55-65,000 square foot forever home.
